Part of the cultural shift I helped orchestrate at Citrix to being design-focused included adopting the design thinking process. Partnering with the Citrix Facilities team, I designed and implemented a 2200-square-foot studio environment to facilitate a company-wide move to the design thinking methods of rapid problem-solving. The setting was designed to accommodate multiple groups simultaneously working in collaborative, rapid-paced sessions. Everything is on wheels. All surfaces are writeable, from the rolling whiteboards to the rolling tabletops. Power drops from the retractable ceiling cords when needed. Bins of creative materials vital to the process are filled with everything from pipe cleaners to Post-it notes.
Since this methodology was vital to the cultural shift charter, we used a glass wall bordering the entire space's length. The passersby can witness the new process without entering the room, allowing folks to get comfortable with the idea slowly. It's a room of inspiration, too. The view from this top-floor studio overlooks all the Silicon Valley legends from Apple to Yahoo. In the corner is an authentic built-in photo booth. Teams can memorialize their group sessions by cramming in the booth along with artifacts they created while working out mind-bending enterprise software solutions.
