After sending this off to Pixar for a job I saw listed that interested me, I noticed something online asking for examples of unusual resumes. I sent many photos; the next thing I knew, it was everywhere. It's still out there. Just search "Pixar Resume," and it will pop up.
Here's the story of why I made it.
I've done several physical resumes, mostly because I enjoy designing and building delightful things. Delighting people signals that you've made an effort to get to know them and what will make them happy.
The actual construction of the Pixar resume was a mix of natural and imaginary. The film transport case and film are authentic, but I did the vintage label and aging.
The sketchbook in the film outlines my work history, project details, and design and management philosophy, done in a way that reflects additional information about me. Hand drawing all the details, including little illustrations rather than photos, and pasting in clippings of some favorite quotes on creativity reflects who I am and how I approach creative problem-solving. Drawing is a critical component of creativity, and sketching is the fastest way to solve challenging problems. The odd and tattered bits of paper with quotes signal that I'm always searching for creative input to improve the creative output.
Did this Pixar resume delight the folks at Pixar? Yep! Did I get that job? Nope. However, the resume did open the channel for more communication. While we both agreed the role wasn't a match, I made new friends and valuable connections, which I assume would not happen through an online submission process.
